The basic design idea of having players swap gems or shapes around in a tiled board to line up a handful of them in a row to score is certainly nothing new. Ever since Bejeweled made the "genre" popular, hundreds or even thousands of puzzle games have come out to introduce twists on the formula (no pun intended). One of the latest is Vempire, which borrows a bit from the power-up mechanics from the likes of Puzzle Quest. The idea here is that you rotate a "block" of four shapes at a time, and once four or more of the same object are aligned, you get points for them (and then they disappear and new blocks fall in to replace the gaps, naturally). The catch with Vempire (which is a combination of the words Vampire and Empire) is that you can purchase power-ups that essentially act as spells during gameplay, and also unlock artifacts (spelled Artefacts in the game) to provide bonuses for you. The other side of the coin is that each area of the game features a boss character of some sort that will appear multiple time during a round to distract and slow you down. Of course, time is ticking, so therein lies the challenge. From a basic gameplay perspective, all you're doing is rotating blocks to line them up, so that's nothing new. The purchasable power-ups will generally either remove a random row of blocks or swap out a certain shape with another. The catch here is that in order to use them, you need to clear certain mana types, one combo followed by another. The first part only stays active for a short period of time, so you need to trigger the second one pretty quickly. This isn't too bad early on, but as you get later into the game and there are more different sorts of shapes in each level, this can get very hard to do on purpose. The unlockable artifacts are good for doing things like increasing the chance that certain mana types will appear, which can help with the spells. This is fine in theory, except that if you equip an artifact that helps bring in a type of mana that wouldn't normally appear in the level, you now have one extra shape to work with, so matching things becomes that much harder. As you don't know what will appear before a level starts, this can involve some experimentation to figure out what works best where.
